If You Feed Them, They Grow
Silas and I, at Mather Point at the Grand Canyon.
This was two weeks ago. This last weekend, he slept all the time - we assume that
that meant that he grew a couple more inches, or so. One other indicator is that
he seems to be slimming down; he's been very active while his friend from Salt Lake
has been here, and that's a good thing, but I don't think that that can account for
him seeming slimmer. I suspect that he's grown more.
Silas may, actually, be the tallest Puckett. And he's only fourteen. How big can he
get? If he's anything like a puppy, he's going to get a LOT bigger, because his feet
still seem to be much too big for him. And his podiatrist says that they (his feet)
are still growing, as well.
I'm 5'9" in the mornings, 5'8.5" in the evenings; he must be at least 6'1" or so.
He's not a mutant - at least, I don't THINK he is, but there was that time that his
mother chained herself to a fence at a nuclear power plant in Florida to protest
cooling-tower water being vented into the manatee habitats (yes, this was before
she sobered up :) So it's possible that she might have picked up some mutations
while she was there; that would explain Silas' height, blonde hair and blue eyes.
But I prefer the "unknown grandfather" explanation. We've found Ethel's mother, but
nobody is sure (including her mother) who her biological father is. So I'm assuming
that his name was Lars, Sven or Olaf.
At any rate, it's now time - obviously - for Silas to challenge me for leadership
of the herd. That's what happens when the young bulls get bigger than the old; they
start to get fiesty, and they start pawing at the ground and tossing their horns
around. It's all part of the Great Circle of Life, a natural and normal phase of
life, and I'm ready for it. I'm old, beat-up, and tired of watching the edges of
the pasture for wolves and mountain lions; it's time for another bull to step up
and take over the roles of guardian, leader and provider.
Of course, he might find it tough making the mortgage payment on his allowance.
